“Alceño Monastrell 12 Meses (months) is a red wine from Jumilla made by Bodegas Alceño, a winery that was founded in 1870 by Roque Martinez, along with two partners. It became the first commercial winery in Jumilla. Currently, it is run by the fourth generation of the family.

The climate in this area is semi-arid, continental and Mediterranean in character. It is characterized by low rainfall throughout the year and average temperatures between 13ºC and 18ºC. This wine is a blend of Monastrell (85%) (otherwishe known as Mataró or Mourvèdre) and Syrah (15%) from the oldest Monastrell grape vineyards planted on calcareous and stony soils, 600 and 800 metres above sea level. Alceño Monastrell 12 months spends four months in new French and American oak barrels (50%) to carry out the process of aging.” https://www.decantalo.com/en/alceno-monastrell-12.html

“It has very good fruit, it’s ripe, with blackberries and damsons, dense, Mediterranean herbs, balsamic, and powerful with a long finish. It has the tasty character of the calcareous soils.”

Terrific for the price: full-bodied, smooth and supple. Aromas of black toasted fruit, smoky oak from generous oak aging. Monastrell food pairings: veal, pizza. 88 points. Reviewed February 1, 2015 by Natalie MacLean.

“As you can see by the score, this wine was one of the big surprises of the blind tasting. The nose has good complexity displaying red cherries, plums, sweet spices (cinnamon, liquorice) and Mediterranean herbs (rosemary flowers). It is powerful and juicy but still has excellent balance. It has lots of rounded tannins supported by an inky structure. The wine lingers on the aftertaste. If you love powerful, juicy wines, this is one to look for.”

17.5 pts, Ferran Centelles, JancisRobinson.com

“Good intensity. Aromas of wild fruit with a touch of liquor. Balsamic notes, eucalyptus and blue flowers, mineral, chocolate and Chinese ink. In the mouth, fresh, alive, sweet in the step, wine of thirst, good acidity and end of half persistence where the alcohol becomes something more present.” vivirelvino.com

“Ripe fruit and new oak wood very well integrated with aromas of vanilla. Very elegant in the nose. Extremely expressive and very well balanced. A full-bodied wine.” 92 pts, decantalo.com

Jumilla is a wine DO title of Murcia, a small region on the Mediterranean coast of south-eastern Spain. The Jumilla viticultural area, which is sandwiched between Yecla in the north and Bullas in the south, is considered to be Murcia's most important in terms of quantity and quality. It is also the region's oldest, established in 1966.

The landscape of Jumilla is characterized by wide valleys and plains, interrupted by theserrania (mountain ranges) that cross Murcia between the sea and the Meseta Central(Inner Plateau) of Spain. Hot, dry and harsh is the best way to describe the zone. Despite these seemingly adverse conditions, vines have been grown here since Roman times, when the region had quite a reputation for its full-bodied red wines.
